3 Key Tips to Help Keep Your Horse Healthy

Horses are beautiful animals. They are friendly and amazing with humans. If you have a horse and wish to take care of its health, give it lots of love, care and attention. Horses are gentle in nature, and they respond to human care and kindness well. If you wish to promote the good health and well-being of your horse, read the following tips below-

  • Grooming- Horses need regular grooming. So, keep the horse in a separate area or stable. This is the place where you will groom your horse in peace. When you are grooming the horse, it is a messy affair. Use a good brush to clean the dirt from the horse. Do not use it on the face or legs of your horse – the skin here is very delicate, and so your horse will get injured if you use the brush on these areas. Smooth the horse's hair with the help of a good quality body brush available in the market for them.

  • Food-Horses eat a lot of grass and hay. Make sure your horse eats 15-20 pounds of grass daily. This is about 1-2% of the weight of your horse. The hay you feed your horse should be clean and free from traces of dust and mold. Portion control is important for the horse to eat so give it small amounts to eat throughout the day. If your horse participates in horse racing tournaments like the ones you watch on TVG, ensure it has a feeding chart. You must feed the horse as per the chart was given to you by the vet. However, if the weather is very hot, you should give your horse grain to eat. This grain should be given to your horse in the morning and the night when the temperature is cool. Water given to your horse should be clean.

  • Emotional bonding with your horse- You have to be very patient with your horse. Emotional bonding with your horse is crucial for its mental health. If the weather is very hot, do not push your horse to do something very tiring. It will not like it and might become difficult to manage. Extreme climatic conditions are not good for your horse. Protect it against extreme cold and heat. Summers is the time when you need to take great care of your horse. They cannot get rid of the heat inside their bodies through sweat so keep it in a cool stable or stall. Provide it with lots of clean and healthy water to drink. Keep your horse away from dangerous plants like ragweed, leaves of oak, red maple wilted leaves, etc. Make a list of plants your horse should be kept away from. They are poisonous, and in case you feel that your horse has ingested something forbidden, call your vet instantly.

Therefore, with the above tips, you effectively are able to take care of your horse without hassles. Make sure that your horse is happy to ensure good health and a longer life with success!
