In what may look like a piece of good news to many, half of 2020 is already gone. With the COVID-19 pandemic taking over the earth, we have spent a long time in self-isolation, and amid these tough times, OTT platforms have been a savior. The Indian web series that released this year caught our undivided attention as no movie theatres were running to tempt us.
Eight months into the year, we look back at the best Indian web series that we have seen so far.
Special Ops (Disney+ Hotstar)
This Disney+ Hotstar series presented us with a thriller that was tailor-made for the digital medium. With Neeraj Pandey at the wheel, this Kay Kay Menon starrer series followed R&AW agents who are investigating to find a pattern in several terrorist attacks. The series gained a lot of recognition from viewers as well as critics. However, it’s turned out to be a full entertainment.
Paatal Lok (Amazon Prime Video)
This Amazon Prime Video web series followed a cop, starred by Jaideep Ahlawat, who is assigned with an attempt to murder case of a journalist. As Hathiram Chowdhary digs deeper, he unearths more about the involvement of bureaucrats, politicians, and businessmen in the functioning of the system that he is supposed to serve.
Though the audience accepted Paatal Lok with open arms, it’s also criticized for showing Hindus negatively, i.e. a person shown eating non-veg in a temple. It has also many adult scenes that make it difficult to watch with family, especially with children.
Asur (Voot Select)
Asur had a nail-biting plot that blended the thriller genres and mythological fiction together. Here, a serial killer on the loose is leaving his signature behind after every murder. These hints are especially pointed at a specific officer with whom he engages in a cat-and-mouse game. The only thing that did not work in Asur’s favor was its lead cast. Although Asur was quite binge-worthy.
