Our sleep is divided into cycles of non-REM and REM sleep. REM stands for rapid eye movement. During REM sleep, your eyes move rapidly in different directions. This is when we get intense dreams. The body has to go through the non-REM stages first to reach the REM stage of sleep.
As babies, we spend about half of our sleep in the REM Stage, but as we grow older the amount of sleep in the REM stage decreases.
Both the sleep cycles play an important role in the overall effectiveness and quality of your sleep. For instance, the later stages of non-REM sleep are necessary for body repairs, regrow tissues, builds bone and muscle, and strengthens the immune system. Your body needs to reach a deep state of sleep for all these processes to take place.

- Maintain A Daily Routine
Following a routine is not only a good habit but also helps us get things done, keep our stress levels at a minimum and make us feel happier. When we follow a routine, we help our body in functioning smoothly. This means we fall asleep at the same time every day and our body is able to get a complete sleep, that is we get deep sleep every day.
- Reduce stress
Once we have a routine in place and we are able to go according to plan. Though initially we need some discipline and some monitoring to see if we are going through the day as planned in our routine. We are now able to do things that we have planned for and we will be able to keep our stress levels at a minimum. When we go to bed in the night we are relaxed and we have already planned our next day in advance.
Including exercise into our daily routine is an essential element for us to get a deep sleep in the night. Our body needs the stretched and worked out for it to function normally and keep the metabolism levels at a high. Thus, it helps us keep a high immune system level and also help us in getting a deep sleep every night without any effort.
- Have a fix bed time

- Maintain a sleep diary
Lastly, maintain a sleep diary can help you live longer. This may not directly affect your body but indirectly you are able to record important elements that affect your sleep. You can write about what time you sleep and wake up, about dreams, how long you sleep, how much caffeine you intake, what food you ate, medications and exercise routines. Recording all these things help you maintain a healthy body and live longer.
